stop: c0000221 {bad image checksum}

This error can be caused by several different issues of which a failing hd is one of them. Before I say that is it lets try to replace the corrupted file. To do this you need to get to the recovery console. To do this you will need your Xp disk

Insert your XP cd and start the system. You will need to go into the bios and set the boot sequence for cdrom first boot device.
Save the changes by pressing F10 and then Y for yes save changes and reboot
When the system reboots you will get a prompt that says press any key to boot to cdrom. Press a key

When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

At the prompt then type in the following

COPY C:\WINDOWS\SERVICEPACKFILES\I386\COMDLG32.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

There should be a prompt asking to overwrite existing file. Type Y
if successful it will say 1 file copied.
Type "exit" without the quotes and reboot. Do not push any key to boot to cdrom but allow the system to boot up completely

What windows setup? Not sure what you are trying to do

okay. I am at the Recovery Console screen and it shows the prompt asking me which windows installation would you like to log onto, when I enter C, it says invalid selection. Please select a valid installation number

It will not let me type out the command you gave above

Your answer is you need to type in the number that corresponds with the windows installation you are trying to repair
In your case the c drive should be number 1

AHH ok, I did that and got the the C: prompt, typed in the command you stated above and got this..

The system cannot find the file specified

from this command prompt can I run the cd with REGCURE on it?

OK then try this
COPY C:\WINDOWS\SERVICEPACKFILES\I386\COMDLG32.DL_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32


You can try regcure but the techs at GTG do not use any reg cleaning software. I cannot tell you not to use it but it is at your descretion.
Please try the line above first. If that doesn't work
There is another command I would suggest trying after if the above command does not work.

Extract C:\WINDOWS\SERVICEPACKFILES\I386\COMDLG32.DL_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

Sorry neither of those commands worked either. First one stated The system cannot find the file specified and the second command said this: The command is not recognized. Type HELP for a list of supported commands

expand d:\i386\COMDLG32.DL_ c:\windows\system32\
it should ask if you want to overwrite existing file
click Y


Let me know if it copies the file successfully

Nope that didn't work either. Still says system cannot find the file or directory specified

hmm did you change to the D drive
I'm guessing D is your cdrom drive. If not then replace D with the letter of your cdrom drive and try the last suggestion again.
