(i.e. the color of everyone's hat that's in front of them)
No, they are unaware of the hat's color pattern so that is not how they would figure it out
None of the men will answer unless they are positive.
Since man #2 knows that the hat in front of him is black, and it must be different from man #1 (or he would know there was 2 black hats in front of him) and no one will answer untill they are sure, man #2 can correctly state that his hat is white!

Man #2 knows that if his hat is the same color as Man #1's, then Man #3 would answer! Therefore his hat is opposite of Man #1, or white.
You're up now.

However, there was no way a boat could carry the necessary suspension cables across the violent water, and the bridge could not be built until the cables spanned the river.
In desperation, the builders staged a contest, open to the public, as a way to solve their problem.
The contest was won by a young boy. Soon afterwards, the cables spanned the water.
How did the boy get the cables across the river?

They control 3 lights, one on the floor above you, one on the floor you are on, one on the floor below you.
You CANNOT see ANY of the lights.
How can you identify what switch goes to what light by going upstairs only once.
