Hello,
My computer will not work. I was using it and left the room, when I came back the screen was black. I thought that it went into hibernation but when I tried to turn it back on it would not work. When Windows attempted to load the screen was black and gave me the following message:

The last attempt to restart the system from its previous location failed. Attempt to restart again?

Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu
Continue with system restart

I chose Continue with system restart. Next there was a blue screen with a stop error it said the following:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or back up utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and chck for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:
*** Stop: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xF7AAD9CC, 0xF7AAD6C8, 0xF736361F)
*** Ntfs.sys - address F736361F base at f7330000, datestamp 41107eea

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

At this point I just shut my computer down. I'm not sure what went wrong or how to fix it. Thank in advance for help!

Hi peterm,

I tried what the article said but I ran into some problems. When my computer boots I never see the message "Please select the operating system to start" (step 2). So I just tapped F8 as my computer tried to boot. This caused it to freeze up when that first message appeared:

The last attempt to restart the system from its previous location failed. Attempt to restart again?

Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu
Continue with system restart

I restarted my computer and tried F10 and selected boot from Hard Disk and then tried F11. When I tried F11 I got a System Recovery window. That window said the follow:

Gateway - System Recovery

System Restore
System Restore environment is incomplete ! Please insert System Restore CD#1 now.
OK

On the left of that window were some other option that are Selecting Recovery Option, Hard Disk Preparation, Copying Files, Changing CD-Rom, Finalizing Recovery, and a timer with Time elapsed and Time remaining. So I'm not sure how to get to the Windows Advanced Options (step 3) as the article you provided requests.

Thanks for helping peterm!

Can we try this again This is from Gateway
System Restore from Command Prompt

1. Restart the computer.

2. As the computer restarts, begin pressing the F8 key after the Gateway BIOS logo appears until the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen appears.

3. On the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and then press the ENTER key.

4. On the Please select the operating system to start screen, select the Microsoft Windows XP operating system, and then press ENTER.

5. At the login screen, log on as the administrator or a user who has administrator rights.

6. At the command prompt, type: c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe. Press ENTER.

Note: If Windows has not been reinstalled, the folder is c:\winnt\system32\restore\rstrui.exe.

7. The graphical user interface (GUI)-based System Restore utility is launched. Follow the instructions on the screen

peterm,
I do have recovery CDs. Gateway did not give them to me, I had to make them. It is a set of 3 CDs.

I tried tapping F8 when the Gateway BIOS appeared but it did nothing. I got the same two error messages which I quoted in my previous posts. The only two option when the BIOS appears are Boot Menu: <F10>, and BIOS Settings: <F2>. I never saw the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen and it did not appear when I pressed F8.

The other options are

Boot Menu
1. DVD/CD Rom Drive
3. Main Hard Drive
4. Boot to LAN
<Enter Setup>

I noticed that there is not a number 2 option. I'm not sure what that means.

Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu
Continue with system restart

When this pops up can you choose this as an option with the keyboard and select it ? If yes try that.
I did not think of that being an option you can select.
Same problem ?
This is very odd Even gateways site says you should be able to get the startup menu option.
I would like to be able to boot to either safe mode or to a command prompt so we could try a windows restore point.
Enter = Setup What happens if you press enter here? or will enter only start one of the options.
With out the startup option we are left with only 2 options
1) download a setof statup disk from www.bootdisk.com (6 floppies)
see if we can get a prompt.
2)a restore with the disc you made.
If we use the option 2) then we must be cafeful not to delete the data as you have that option. Also you will have to redownload all the windows updates.
HMMM are you by chance using a USB keyboard. If yes do you have a ps2 keyboard you can plug in and try to select delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu or tryF8 again

Hi,
I can chose "Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu" or "Continue with system restart". I have only chose "Continue with system restart" and have not tried the first option. This is because I'm not sure what it means by Delete restoration data. Would you like me to try the Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu option?

I looked at the page you provided a link to. I think that the problem could be similar but I'm not sure if my computer went into Hibernate mode before this problem started. There is a chance that it did though, I'm not sure. But the difference is that on that page it said the error is:

System restart has been paused:

Continue with system restart.
Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu.

and the error I get, which is just a little different, is:

The last attempt to restart the system from its previous location failed. Attempt to restart again?

Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu
Continue with system restart

The solution on that page is to select the "Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu" option. It looks like I should try that maybe.

My keyboard is not USB, it is a laptop computer.
Thanks

I think it is the best shot we have. I have found this error on other sites as well. As with everything it is not a 100% certin fix. or we try a boot disk option.
If this was my computer I would try that option. But I never have anything on my computer that is a must have I can't afford to loose. By all reasons it should not damage data. If you like I can ask Wannabe1 to have a look and see if he agrees. Just to have another opion.
Cheers

Ok I will try "Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu" option. I'll let you know how that goes and what happens. Sure you could ask Wannabe1 if you feel we need another opinion. I'm not sure.

Howdy...

peterm is correct...this sure does look like a corrupted recovery file...If it were my machine, I would follow the procedure to try a different file to restore from.
