Hi!

Been having some trouble with my windows updates, so I went into my zone alarm pro firewall to make sure nothing was being blocked and came across this program. wupdmgr.exe

Is this a legitimate Microsoft program? I went on the net and read it could be a spybot worm. The executable icon for this program is different. It is not square, like most executables. It has an abstract picture as an icon, that isn't legible to me. thanks a lot for the help!

C:\WINNT\system32\wupdmgr.exe

I asked microsoft about this program and if it was related to windows update and they said no. Appreciate help with this, unsure what damage this file may be doing. would like to delete it completely & correctly. thanks!

Hi,

[wupdmgr.exe] is not system process. It is not related to Microsoft update.

Hi mango_nj,

The file wupdmgr.exe if found anywhere except in the System32 folder has the potential to be considered suspicious. I believe that you will find that this file on your system is harmless, seeing that it is located at C:\WINNT\system32\wupdmgr.exe

To check this file, I would like you to upload it for analysis.

Jotti File Submission:
  • Please go to Jotti's malware scan
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan"box on the top of the page:
    • C:\WINNT\system32\wupdmgr.exe
  • Click on the submit button
  • Please post the results in your next reply.
If you do not still have HijackThis on your computer please download it from here.

Please post the Jotti's analysis and include a fresh HijackThis log for me to review, just in case.

Thanks.

Hi mango_nj,

Congratulations. Your log appears to be clean. :whistling:

Please follow these Tips to prevent a possible infection or re-infection.

Many computers become infected because of unpatched Operating Systems.

Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly.

Download, install AND update the following free programs. It is important to keep all anti-malware programs updated. Please update at least once a week.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 2 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Reason for edit: Fix typo.

WHEW!!! that is good to hear. I started getting so worried. The last time I was in here, I took all the necessary steps to prevent any further infections. I upgraded to zone alarm pro, got kaspersky antivirus, switched to firefox and I'm already runnning Spybot & Spyware Blaster.

I read on the net, especially on bleeping computer that wupdmgr was not a good program to have on your system. I found it by accident and didn't know what to do about it.

I did a search and saw it here:

C:\WINNT\System32 - which you said was ok
C:\I386
F:\Windows

are the other places ok for it to be?? The F Drive was a hard drive from my old pc, I had installed in my new one.

I have killed access to wupdmgr in my firewall. should I leave it that way?? microsoft says its not part of their update process.

Hello mango_nj,

Maybe I was a little hasty in saying that your system was clean. Could you please run these scans.

First download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Boot into Safe Mode: You can do this by restarting your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Please note: You must use Internet Explorer for this as it uses an ActiveX component.

This scan may take a while to complete, so please be patient and let it finish.

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Thanks.

I did both AVG anti-spyware and the Kaspersky web scanner

I followed your instructions with AVG. after the scan was done and I had selected APPLY ALL ACTIONS for the infections found - I clicked on the reports icon at the top of the page and it said NO REPORTS AVAILABLE. all options were grayed out. I was unable to save the report as a text document to post. This happened eventhough during setup I selected 'Auto generate reports during every scan' and unselected 'only if threats found'. Selections still in place. Unsure why it wouldn't let me generate a report. program took up entire screen in safe mode. Anything to far left or right, was cut off. Had a heck of a time closing it.

The only information I did get from the AVG scan on the status screen:

-- Detected malware so far: 137
-- Files in quarantine: 4 [what action do i take with these?]

Hi mango_nj,

Depending on your monitor size and screen resolution AVG Anti-Spyware can sometimes take up the whole of the screen in Safe mode. To close it simply press the windows button (next to Ctrl) on your keyboard then right click on the AVG Anti-Spyware on the taskbar and select Close from the menu.

When you performed the scan with AVG Anti-Spyware did you have the option of clicking the Save Report button at the botttom of the AVG Anti-Spyware results. Please use that button to save the scan results if it is enabled.

For the time being leave the files in the Quarantine folder, but plaese post a screenshot of the Quarantine folder. If you have any problem doing this then please let me know and I will post instructions for this.

Could you boot into Safe mode and perform the AVG Anti-Spyware scan as per the instructions in my previous post.

Please post the AVG Anti-Spyware results together with a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is now behaving.

Thanks.

hi Octagonal!

ty for the help closing avg in safe mode. i'll do the avg scan/hijackthis again. i believe there is a 'save report' button at the bottom of the avg results page - but if i scan again and click on that button - will I still be able to select 'Apply All Actions' if I still have infections?? pls let me know. scan takes a super long time - want to get it right.

i tried to get back to the results page for my 1st scan, but once i selected 'Apply all actions' that information is no longer there. so i can't save the report for it. I was able to get a screen shot of the quarantined items though [attached].

Hi mango_nj,

You shouldn't have any problems clicking the Apply All Actions after saving the report that way. If you have too many problems with this then we may try looking at an alternative. Go ahead with the scan and lets see how this eventuates. The files in Quarantine should be ok for the time being. :whistling:

G`morning Octagonal!

I did another avg scan in safe mode, but save report option on results page was grayed out. Only option given was 'apply all actions' and 'new scan'. I took a screen shot for you, so you could see [below]. I have no report available for avg scan. maybe since it's a trial, it won't let me save reports.

here is my 2nd hijack this log.

Hi mango_nj,

I did a search and saw it here:

C:\WINNT\System32 - which you said was ok
C:\I386
F:\Windows

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):

C:\I386\wupdmgr.exe <<Make sure it is this location
F:\Windows\wupdmgr.exe <<Make sure it is this location

It is ok to Quarantine those entries in AVG Anti-Spyware, they are mainly cookies. The only suggestion that I can offer for problem that you are experiencing with AVG Anti-Spyware not saving Reports is to uninstall then re-install a fresh copy of the program. If you do this then it is ok to delete the Quarantined entries as well.

Are you experiencing any other Malware type problems?
