i am thinking that there is something up with your security programs

i can see AVG in your logs and i can see parts of McAfee. would i be right in thinking that you have tried to get rid of McAfee from your system. if so, could you run the McAfee removal tool.

====McAfee Removal Tool====
Download and run the McAfee removal tool from http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe. This should get rid of McAfee.

====AVG====
AVG: did you get this from this link here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/ or are you running a paid version?

if the 2 cases above are correct, could you make sure it is running - i am not seeing as many processes related to AVG that i would expect.

if there is a problem, could you uninstall and then reinstall it either from your discs or the above link (for the free version)

====FIREWALLS====
on the subject of firewalls, you seem to have 2, possibly 3 running:
- WInGate <===did you install this?
- ZoneAlarm <===did you install this?
- windows firewall (possibly)

you should only have one running, therefore could you ensure that this is the case (and could you check to see if the AVG firewall is running, if at all - only relevant if this is the paid version)

let me know how that all went.

Ok I ran the mcaffee removl just fine.

I uninstalled WinGate since to be honest I forgot I even had that, but I've kept Zone Alarm.

I also reinstalled my AVG (free edition, from the website). Also it always runs whenever my PC is on and has been throughout these stages.

I'm still getting explorer crash =P

And also annoyingly now Visual Basic keeps crashing, don't know when that started happening though because I havn't used it before just now for like a few months.

not out of options yet.

====STEP 1====
click on Start, click on Run
copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
This will open up Deckard's File Association Tool
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • Select everything it is displaying there
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Then rescan with DAFT again - it should say now that "All associations are OK"
  • Close DAFT if you receive that message. This means that it is fixed now.

====STEP 2====
Download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTScanIt, allow it to run.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Save that notepad file
If the log is too large to post, use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

====STEP 3====
i just want to see the extra.txt this time

click on Start, click on Run
copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
This will open up DSS configuration

Please post back extra txt only

Start OTScanIt. Copy/Paste the information in the Code box below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

Also let me know of any problems you encountered performing the steps above or any continuing problems you are still having with the computer.

Explorer still crashes, lol

It seems to crash more when I open video files... (In Divx though, not WMA)

I have a suspicion now that it's to do with my Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0, partly because I get the option to "debug" which opens in C++, partly because VB keeps not responding, but also, I tried to uninstall it just now, and I got an error saying a file was missing, and it would't make any progress. I reinstalled it, but to a new loation, which means the old one would (if it was) still be messing stuff up?

Heres the new OTscan anyways

Hi impega

from a malware point of view your logs are clean :)

I reinstalled it, but to a new loation, which means the old one would (if it was) still be messing stuff up?

that is beyond my knowledge. so lets wrap this up here and i will direct you to another part of the forum where they should be able to give you better help on your explore issue.

once you have done the steps below you should post your issue in the Windows XP™, 2000, 2003, NT part of this forum. say your machine has been cleared of malware.

in this post we will clear away the fix tools, reset your restore points (there will be infections lurking in there) and i will leave you with some ideas on how to enhance the protection of your machine against future infection.

====STEP 1====
clearing away the fix tools:

Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")

  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
you can clear way the other fix tools we used also

====STEP 2====
Resetting your restore points:

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

====AND FINALLY====
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
