its only ubunto I will suggest as this is the distro that I've explore more than others.

Ubuntu I hear will be (or where) replacing Pidgin with Empathy IM in future versions of Ubuntu. Might want to give that a try. I am still using Pidgin, but I hardly use IM.
I think it hardly matters what disto you chose to use. Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, SUSE, Mandriva etc. The better question is what desktop environment you want to use. Gnome and KDE being the two main choses. I like Gnome, I find it visually less busy, and I have heard it is more stable then KDE. KDE is supposed to be far more configurable if you like doing that.
For the record I am currently running Ubuntu 9.10 (been doing so since the alpha2).
