Go Start and then to Run ("Start Search" in Vista),
Type in: sfc /scannow
Click OK (Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) finds any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc does not find any errors in Windows XP, it will simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

For Vista users ONLY: Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it to Flyupload, and post download link.

If you don't have Windows CD....
This applies mostly to Windows XP, since Vista rarely requires use of its DVD while running "sfc"
Note This method will not necessarily work as well, as when using Windows CD, because not always ALL system files are backed up on your hard drive. Also, backed up files may be corrupted as well.

Go Start and then Run
type in regedit and click OK

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries Values on the right hand side.

The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, usually D and that is why it is asking for the XP CD.
All we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!

Thanks to Broni for the instructions

That would tell me it found nothing to correct.
Did you stop Farmville since it was one of the issues from the beginning?

Lets see what you have in your startup

Please click on
Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Startups
Then uncheck everything and restart.
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a startup problem
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.
Post back with the results

I had the problem loooong before FarmVille so I don't think removing that is going to help solve it

I had 4 programs for startup:
Microsoft Windows Operating System
Symantec Security Technologies
Conexant High Definition Audio Filter Agent
Conexant Smart Audio

And I only had the 2 audio things on startup because I used to have problems with the audio and the sound would just cut out and I needed them to fix it but that's been fine for a while so I've disabled them two and everything is fine so far. I have a suspicion that the Symantec might be causing some sort of problem, it's been unregistered for a while now and I often get some error message about "LiveUpdate COM" not working or something, can you recommend free virus/whatever protection that I can use if I disabled Symantec/Norton?

Avast or Avira. Both are free and not as resource hogs as Nortons.

I got Avast and did a full system scan, it found 2 errors and removed them, but I'm still getting the freezing, it's so determined not to be fixed

I don't know, is there a way to check the files that avast has removed? I know one had /setup/ in it's file path

OK well this is a new direction now. It would seem that avast has detected maybe a infection that may be part of the problem.
I suggest you go to the Malware Removal and Spyware Removal Forum and run all the steps located in the
START HERE. These self-help tools will help you clean up 70% of problems on your own.
If you are still having problems after doing the steps, then please post the reguested logs in THAT forum.
If you are unable to run any of the tools then start a new topic in the malware forum and put this in the subject line...I am unable to run any malware tools

If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).

Add a link to this topic so that malware tech can see what steps have been taken here

I'm still watching :) :) as i would like to know if this could be caused by a infection.
If not then I'm thinking it is time to try a new user account and see if that helps.
Repair Installation to try to fix the existing OS
Parallel to see if it may be a new installation needed.
