Hi, I hve taken all the steps as outlined in your Malware & Spyware Removal Guide and although Malwarebytes has quarantined the Trojan.ZbotR.Gen I am still suffering browser hijacks e.g. unable to connect to Microsoft Windows Update page and sometimes being redirected to adware sites when trying to access other websites. I am also unable to connect to Windows Update from Windows Security Center.

I'm running XP Pro with Avast & Windows Firewall.

I have included the MBAM, GMER & OTL log files which hopefully will shed some light on the problem.

Your help would be very much appreciated - cheers, Paul.

Hi pmc66,

Welcome to Geekstogo. My name is Salagubang and I'll be helping you with this problem.

I am still a trainee so all my posts will be checked by an Expert. It's your advantage that there are two people looking at your log but responses may be a little delayed so please be patient.

  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described. I would recommend printing them out, if you can, as you can check off each step as you complete it. If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please come back to me for clarification.
  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste so as to include the log in your reply. You can do this in separate posts if it's easier for you
  • English is not my first language, so please do not use slang or idioms, as this makes it difficult to understand for me.

I am looking over your logs and will post a reply soon. :D

Hi pmc66,

Are you experiencing redirects on both Firefox and IE browser?

Step One

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    SRV - File not found [On_Demand | Stopped] -- C:\DOCUME~1\McCarthy\LOCALS~1\Temp\DLSJJDTDFGV.exe -- (DLSJJDTDFGV)
    Drivers32: midi9 - C:\DOCUME~1\McCarthy\LOCALS~1\Temp\qlpif.dat 2yADJIIHEP File not found

    :Services

    :Reg

    :Files

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Step Two

Save these instructions so you can have access to them while in Safe Mode.

Please click here to download AVP Tool by Kaspersky.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode.

You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter
    .

  • Double click the setup file to run it.
  • Click Next to continue.
  • Accept the Licence agreement and click on next
  • It will by default install it to your desktop folder.Click Next.
  • It will then open a box There will be a tab that says Automatic scan.
  • Under Automatic scan make sure these are checked.

  • Hidden Startup Objects
  • System Memory
  • Disk Boot Sectors.
  • My Computer.
  • Also any other drives (Removable that you may have)

Leave the rest of the settings as they appear as default.

  • Then click on Scan at the to right hand Corner.
  • It will automatically Neutralize any objects found.
  • If some objects are left un-neutralized then click the button that says Neutralize all
  • If it says it cannot be Neutralized then chooose The delete option when prompted.
  • After that is done click on the reports button at the bottom and save it to file name it Kas.
  • Save it somewhere convenient like your desktop and just post only the detected Virus\malware in the report it will be at the very top under Detected post those results in your next reply.

Note: This tool will self uninstall when you close it so please save the log before closing it.

Hi Salagubang, thanks for this. I don't have Firefox. Redirects are from IE my main browser but it also occurs in Safari which I use occasionally

You can post another OTL scan so I can take a look. :D

In the meantime, monitor your browser, visit some sites and update me if you still encounter redirects.

Hi pcm66,

Its past midnight here and I am off to bed. I will be posting a fix as soon early tom.

At the moment, if you have another computer to use, use that instead as I recommend this computer be used offline until we cleared it.

Hi pmc66,

You have a backdoor trojan installed on your computer.

Backdoor Trojans, IRCBots and Infostealers are very dangerous because they provide a way of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and can steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which they send back to the hacker. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans as part of an exploit to to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge.
If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, I suggest you do the following.
  • All passwords should be changed to include those used for banking, email, eBay and forums. You should consider them to be compromised. They should be changed using a different computer and not the infected one. If you use the infected computer, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information.
  • Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach.

Step One

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    O20 - Winlogon\Notify\zetscap: DllName - zetscap.dll - C:\WINDOWS\System32\zetscap.dll ()
    [2010/09/24 15:16:24 | 000,010,756 | ---- | M] () -- C:\WINDOWS\System32\zetscap.dll

    :Services

    :Reg

    :Files

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Step Two
Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop.
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file, then on Start and allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, chose the Complete Scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow Posted Image at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look and see if you can click the following icon next to the files found:
    Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
  • This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer to allow files that were in use to be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply along with a new OTL log.
NOTE: During the scan, a pop-up window will open asking for full version purchase. Simply close the window by clicking on X in upper right corner.

Step Three

Please know that the Kaspersky Online Scan (Step Two) can take 6-7+ hours. I recommend running it overnight. :D Remember to save and post back the log!

Posted Image You don't appear to have Java installed (I could have missed it). Java is required for many functions over the Internet. We need it now for an online scan. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components (If I missed) and upgrade\install the application:
  • Upgrading Java :
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 21 .
  • Click the JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE) "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform, Register and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation ( jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Step Four
Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, please visit Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
    • Close any open programs
    • Turn off any realtime scanners of any existing antivirus program while performing the scan.
Click Here! for instructions on disabling some common realtime programs.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, adware, dialers, and other riskware
    • Archives
    • E-mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View report... at the bottom.
  • Click the Save report... button.

    Posted Image
  • Change the Files of type dropdown box to Text file (.txt) and name the file KasReport.txt to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

Hi Salagubang,
My desktop icons and toolbar has disappeared. All I can access is task manager by pressing ctrl-alt-del.
Should I try booting up in safe mode to run OTL?

Hi pcm66,

Download OTL to a folder in your computer.
  • To open OTL using your Task Manager, click "File" and choose "New Task"
  • Browse to the folder where OTL is located and then click "OK"
  • Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs
    drivers32
    explorer.exe /md5
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them if you need to start a new topic.
