It showed a message saying about 3 files were broken..and I was able to delete them.
and continue.. I was offered an option later to fix errors.
I am not sure if these are to do with my problem..but Ive saved copy of the files.
I tried to follow your instrction to fix sound... but unfortunately there is no
change... ie sounds still off.
I may be able to see if the broken files are the problem.
they are HKEY Class ones..with very long numbers.. I will have to send a gif if you need to
see them..
codec opened up a webpage and theres an option to fix errors.

Click here to Fix Codec Errors & Improve PC Performance
I wonder if I should run this..

I haven't tested that so no, don't click on the link.
Can you post a link sample to the youtube video that is not making a sound. I would like to try it here.
Also, you may have to reinstall the sound driver after all, even though it is not showing any error. Just so we can rule it out as the possible cause of the problem - borked driver that is.

I suspect that fix errors page may be a suspect site ....Ive seen similar ones before..
that can put malware on ones computer if you try the fix...
IT does seem to have become very complex with so many options trying to fix the sound.
I am not sure if I can find my origional sound driver CD that should had come with my laptop..
or if its otherwise downloadable..
heres two videos that I tried... ones connected to youtube the other is just one I selected at random.

-------------------
If it tried to fix some reg keys, I feel we should restart the machine for changes to take effect. Please try again after restarting the machine.
---------------
I will try and do the sound driver tomorrow...
I will have to sleep 1st.... I

speak later... Many thanks for you help...
Its become a huge task...and I suspect we can only go so far...
BUT I do hope that at least we can get the sound back soon ..
Cheers for now

I've asked the assistance of our Technical Staff regarding our problem and suggested we try the following solution on the No Audio problem :
How To Fix:
- Go to Start and select Run and type regedit to open the Registry Editor.
- Navigate to the following key by using the + to expand the folders: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32
- Now right-click on the heading Drivers32 and select New -> String Value
- Call this new String Value wavemapper.
- Now double-click the wavemapper entry you just created and for the Value field, type in msacm32.drv and click OK.
- Close the Registry Editor and try watching a video on youtube again. (You might have to reboot your PC)

I have tried downloading two Dell drivers...one that said it was for Audio yesterday
and the other from the last link you gave me a few minutes ago today
as the one I did yesterday did not work... I have just restarted my machine
and unfortunately IT did NOT resolve my sound problem...
I just tried to follow your latest instructions...
and unfortunately I got a message that would not allow me to change the name of the Driver 32 string value ( which came up as called New Value #1) to rename it to wavemapper.
It says that The Specified value name already exists and to try another name.
SO I am NOT sure what to do next.. I can try again and rename with another name
BUT without knowing what to call it I am a bit surprised if its windows NT that may be causing the problem...if that was one of the older versions of windows included within
my computer.. ( NOT that I myself Know much about such things as they are outside my knowledge..Its just that I looked up what google said about windows NT)
What ever the problem It seems a bit of a mystery as to why it occurred.
WHAT I HAD NOTED the last few weeks is when my computer starts initially
It does make a certain sound...and lately this sound has seemed distorted.
Whether this is a driver issue or caused by what ever the big problem that we have tried to resolve over the last several weeks , I dont know..

Can you do this audio checks for me.
1. Open any audio file (locally from your harddisk) and see if it plays correctly.
2. Play a movie from a CD (or any saved videos from your harddisk) using windows media player and check if the audio plays correctly.
+++++++++++++++++++++
I am thinking of running the Windows System File checker (twas also suggested by tech staff); it scans for corrupt or missing files, however, it may prompt to insert the windows installation CD if it needs to obtain files. Do you have an XP disk handy?
If not then there are still a couple of restore/backups that was created during our previous fixes that we can go back into.

As I said yesterday, I did play a realtime player video and the sound worked ok.
I just Put a CD in my CD drive and played it ( it opened as Windows media player )
and again the sound works ok..
I do have a Windows XP disc somewhere... BUT I will have to search for it..as I am not
exactly sure where it is at the moment and a few months ago I had a lot of work done
in my House and I had to move a Lot of things around.
I may get lucky and find it in short time...but no guarantee.

Having sound on both offline audio and movie files is a good sign as the problem seems to be particularly related to flash.

I had already downloaded the latest version of adobe flashplayer a few days ago ....
and I downloaded adobe shock player last night..
I tried to play youtube videos and unfortunately the sound is still not
working..
IF you think that I may be better trying the windows XP disc I will try and find it for later.
