Much the same.

Changed it to no page, shut down and restart after 10 minutes into safe mode with networking. System Properties pops up and still at 256.

Hmmm should not do that -

Might be worth backing up your data now as we may have to do a repair

Do you have the Vista CD ?

No I only have the Advent System Recovery DVD which I got with the computer. I think it contains Vista. Also got the Vista recovery disc still at hand if that helps!

Looking at this it might be best to reinstall Vista as this is a problem that we have not come across before and at the moment are just running through the list of what could have gone wrong

Sorry for being so thick, but I've never actually had to reinstall an operating system.

After I save my data onto some discs, will I just stick in the Advent CD that came with the computer?

Try number four option first - if that does not resolve the problem then use five

To recover your Advent PC you will need your Advent System Recovery CD.
  • Place the CD into the DVD drive and restart your computer.
  • Press R on the keyboard when prompted.
  • The recovery will load and display a menu of options:
  • Non-destructive recovery: this option will restore Windows, supplied applications, and drivers. This option will not destroy your documents or programs. These will be backed up along with the registry. These are restored at the end of the recovery process.
  • System Recovery - No format: this will reinstall Windows, supplied applications and drivers. It will move your files to a folder called "My old disk structure". Any applications (except those supplied) will need to be reinstalled.
  • System Recovery - Quick format: this option will erase your hard drive including your personal files. Windows, supplied applications and drivers will be reinstalled.
  • Select the Non-destructive recovery option and press Next.
  • You will be informed about System Restore in Windows, click Yes.
  • The recovery will begin. Once this is complete you should eject the CD and click Restart.

It autoloads Tech Guys Repair without the need to press R or anything. However I only seem to get two options, a destructive repair or a Repair, which can only be done with a Vista System Restore (apparently different from restore points as I don't appear to have any!).

I'm now moving things into my USB drive as it looks like I need to do a full reinstall. However I've ran out of space and it says I need to format the DVD while in safe mode before I can shift data onto it. Any idea how?

No it's fine. I'm using that ImgBurn you had me download. Just going to finish transferring all my files onto discs then I choose the destructive option with the advent CD...and that's me?

No more problems I hope!

Out of curiosity, how long does the whole thing take?

Up to an hour maybe - it depends on the manufacturers extras they put in
