I set up a new restore point thru System Protection, as described. Then I downloaded Windows Repair. When I tried to run it, it couldn't find the restore point that I had just created and asked if I wanted it to do a backup and set a restore point. I said no and then got to the screen to select repair options. I selected the ones that you specified. They all ran. The system restarted and I immediately observed the same problem.

However, I now believe that the problem is not IE specific, but is some kind of slow bootup problem (it's just that I usually go to IE immediately upon start up). Again, once I do another restart, the problem seems to resolve itself. I also still note that my little "boot time tracker" utility no longer runs at boot time and unfortunately, I can't seem to find where I can turn it back on. I can't even identify what it is, but it was part of the factory sw installation on the Lenovo. Prior to this whole mess, it had been showing boot times of around 60 seconds and I never observed any problems getting in to IE or any other apps once I was up and running.

I looked through the Knowledge Base, the forum, and blogs. I didn't find any discussion of an intermittent slow boot process that gets resolved with a 2nd restart. I understand that this isn't the problem that I originally wrote you about, but it's not what I signed up for either. This symptom is new since we started trying to resolve the system hang on startup. So something that we did to resolve the origninal problem has essentially caused this.

We also cleaned out temporary files that might have contained malware.

None of that should have caused your machine problems. Having said that malware was removed from IE. Sometimes when malware is removed it leaves behind some corruption hence the attempt at an IE fix.

By the way have you tried reinstalling IE one of the solutions outlined in the link I gave you? Very often that solves problems associated with Internet Explorer.

The Lenovo support center does have comprehensive help, as you have a Lenovo I thought you might find a solution for your problems there. No luck it seems.

I am not familiar with your "boot time tracker" utility. Did you add that or did it come with your Lenovo?

This is Win 7 way to track boot time. I suspect it is not what you are looking for but it may be of interest:

Meantime we could check on the boot logging:

Start > All Programs > Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Then type (with an Enter after each line).

msconfig

Click on the Boot tab. Check the boot log box and then Apply and OK. Reboot.

After a boot the log should be at C:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt

Copy and post back here.

Hi. I reinstalled IE9. The uninstallation process was a bear. Once the computer restarted, it appeared to get hung up, with the "Preparing to Configure Windows. Do Not Turn off your Computer." message displayed. That message was displayed for about 30 minutes before I had to leave the house. I left it running and when I got back home, 3 hours later, everything looked like it had worked. Is that normal for the uninstall to take that long? Anyway, I got IE9 reinstalled and things seem to be moving along a little more quickly - no slowdowns yet.

The "boot time tracker" utility was definitely installed on the Lenovo when I bought it. It would display a little window in the lower right of the desktop at the end of the boot specifying how long the boot had taken. It would display for about 5 seconds and then disappear. I don't know what it's called or where it is. Otherwise, I would turn it back on.

The link that you provided to the Win7 Event Viewer is not the same thing. I stumbled onto that utility a couple days ago and looked at the history of boots since I bought the computer in October. The boot times have varied from 40 seconds to 3 minutes. What I found more interesting is that EVERY boot has been categorized with a "Level" of Error, Critical, or Warning. I really don't know how to interpret any of that.

I ran the bootlog like you asked. The results are below. Let me know if I need to go back in and uncheck the boot log box. Thanks.

Once the computer restarted, it appeared to get hung up, with the "Preparing to Configure Windows.

Very normal. It seems to be doing nothing for quite some time then it moves on.

Is that normal for the uninstall to take that long?

It can take a while. Longer if you internet connection is slow.

I got IE9 reinstalled and things seem to be moving along a little more quickly - no slowdowns yet.

What I found more interesting is that EVERY boot has been categorized with a "Level" of Error, Critical, or Warning

Windows does record any number of errors but generally they are nothing to worry about.

In fact there is a scam out there where people receive a telephone call from someone purporting to be a microsoft operative (microsoft would never telephone you like that) and asking you to check for error messages. They then tell you that you have a problem and seek your permission to take remote control of your machine. After that they can access all sorts of information.

The boot times have varied from 40 seconds to 3 minutes

Would have got slower when that malware got on your machine.

I am wondering if what you had was a Windows Gadget running on your machine.

There is some security vulnerability with them and I think Windows has discontinued support.

Having said that right click on your desktop and click on Gadgets. A window with gadgets should come up and you may find your utility there. Tell me how you get on.

Well I have found one that I think matches your description.

You can download and install it but it comes with the very type of search bar that we have removed from your system.

Explains why it disappeared... it would have been removed in the process of cleaning the malware.

I have tested it on my machine however and you can install it without the search bar.

In the process of installing it you arrive at a window offering you a choice of installation modes. If you choose Advanced you can uncheck the search bar installation options and proceed. On my machine it installed successfully without the search bar.

HI. I read your PMs and I agree with you that installing that specific boot timeer with the search bar is not worth the potential headache. I have learned how to check the Event Viewer and would rather use that when I want it than expose my system to malware. I had no idea that the utility might have been contributing to the problem. Like I said, this was a utility that came installed on the computer when I bought it. Thanks for the research!!

It's interesting. I found a conduit bar which I didn't want on my notebook. Found it when I ran OTL just to check a question I had. Not really malware but close. I do wonder about the things that come with some manufacturers products nowadays.
