thank you for all your help. It was so frustrating to have the computer freeze up and not work. I really appreciate it. Also thank you a whole bunch for helping me to be able to download SP3, I didn't think I could ever get it installed

I can't download MSE. When I save the file and go to open it, it says windows cannot open file.

Got it installed, but now uninstalling AVG and installing this I am getting server not found again, after it worked so well all day.

I think I might have messed up. After installing MSE and getting server not found message I uninstalled it and was trying to install AVG again. However, when looking at the task manager I am seeing some things I am confused about.
I don't know if MSE is completely gone and if AVG is gone. I don't want to have double of everything. Now driver installation failure when trying to re install AVG.

What I don't understand is, it shows on my control panel that virus protection avg is on, but I uninstalled it.

Download and run the AVG Removal tool. Make sure you get Download AVG uninstall tool 32bit.

Uninstall MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) from Control Panel / Add and Remove Programs.

Reboot.

Install MSE. Let it update.

After 10 minutes of time server not found comes up. That always happened when I installed SP3 before. I am in a dilemma whether I should leave it or not. It's worse than before right now.

I don't see MSE in my control panel, so I guess it is not installed.
When I click run for the AVG remover I get a black box in the background with AVG remover C document settings etc and a box in front sayin it may take one or more reboots to clean it and must be started from local drive(? what does that mean)
But nothing happens other than that.

Also I looked up the internet connection problem with SP3 and it said to go into services and right click wireless config and hit restart. I did, not sure if it will work.

You need to download and save the AVG Removal tool on your hard drive, then run it from there.

For Wireless, in services, make sure WLAN Autoconfig it set to Automatic and Started.

I don't know what it could be, but I can't stay on for more than 5 or 10 minutes before server not found comes up. My laptop and my sisters desktop are fine, it is only this desktop. It happens with firefox and IE.

Out of frustration I dd a system restore to Feb. It didn't work. Then because I had problems when I installed SP3 before, I tried to uninstall it and after it goes through the process and finishes it comes up with system cannot find file specified, SP3 was not uninstalled. So I did a system restore back to today and still the same thing. I really don't know what to do or what is happening.

You keep doing things that cause more problems instead of following directions.

I know you're frustrated, as I would be but please finish doing what I ask and let me know the results.
If you don't want to do that, that's okay, just let me know and I won't keep making suggestions.

Anyway, think about doing a Repair Install. It will leave your data and most installed programs alone, though you will have to reinstall some like anti-virus. You will need a XP Install CD to do this.

I'm sorry. I will have to install SP3 again. As far as AVG removal, I saved it to my downloads, but when I click on it and hit run nothing happens. I am going to go back through everything again as you suggested. I really thank you for your patience. I just don't understand why I can't stay on longer than 5 minutes and then I have to restart.
Again I really appreciate you taking the time and I apologize if it seemed any way other than that.

I don't have a XP CD.

I will try and find someone with the cd. I thought I had one because the computer is several years old. I can't even do a system restore or undo anymore.

could I have a virus that is not showing up in my scans? Everything is haywire, can't stay on internet, system restore doesn't work, says SP3 is installed, yet I don't see it in my programs and AVG won't remove.

The best way to find out is to go to the Virus, Spyware, Malware Removal forum, read the first post and follow instructions.

Add a link to this thread in the malware thread so they will know what we've done.

Come back here once you get a clean bill of health if you still have problems.

I am back here after the tremendous time and effort godawgs took with my problem on the virus and spyware removal forum.

I still cannot stay connected to the internet and the same update keeps popping up for installation.

After all the many scans, I am clean no malware or viruses. godawgs believes it is an operation system issue.
We ran combofix and the recovery center was installed. The combo fix log is here: .http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/329651-server-not-foundsystem-restore-not-working/page__view__findpost__p__2301479

Here is the link to the spyware forum and my topic so that you may see what we did.

I am a bit of a novice not too bad but can follow instructions. I can't find my xp cd, so if I need to reinstall I will have to see if I can borrow one from someone if that is what has to be done. Thank you.

You and godawgs did an amazing amount of work in the malware forum. I thought for sure the Windows Repair All-In-One fixed your problems.

I really do think at this point the best thing to do is save your data and try a Repair Install of XP. If that doesn't fix the problem then you will have to do a Clean Install.
