So the Health status was set to Good in green, and none of the lines were in yellow or red?

Which means that the hard drive isn't failing. Alright, let's try something else.

EndqYRa.pngSystem File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system:
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command sfc /scannow (there's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow") and press on Enter;
  • Let the scan run until the end (100%), then copy/paste in your next reply the message that is returned after;

There's no space between the "/" and "scannow", it's all in one "/scannow".

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Alright, next time will be done overnight.

EndqYRa.pngCheck Disk (chkdsk)
Follow the instructions below to run a CHKDSK scan on your Windows partition;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command chkdsk /r (there's a space between "chkdsk" and "/r") and press on Enter;
  • A message will be returned, stating that the drive cannot be locked because it's already in use, and you'll be asked if you want to schedule the scan for the next restart. Enter y and press on Enter;
  • Restart your computer, and the chkdsk scan will be launched automatically;
  • WARNING: Depending on your hard drive (specs, free space, fragmentation, etc.) this scan can be relatively long to complete. Give it all the time it needs to finish. Do not interrupt it for any reason there is, or you might be damaging your drive in the process and make your Windows unbootable. It's suggested to let this scan run overnight or when you leave the house for a few hours (when you go to work for example). If you are running this scan on a laptop, don't forget to leave it plugged in;

Tried several times to get this to run, either on reboot or reboot in safe mode, but wasn't successful.  The closest I got was on a "regular" reboot, there was a screen message which said something like "a disk scan was scheduled but was cancelled."  (Didn't ge the whole message as it flashed on and off quickly.)  I had to run the command from safe mode since Windows Explorer is still disabled.

You can run it from the Recovery PE. In order to do that, you'll have to boot in the "Repair your computer" mode, when you press F8 prior to the Windows boot then wait for the end of the scan, click on "Return to the main menu" and choose the "Open a command prompt" option at the bottom of the list. However, you'll need to identify the letter attributed to the Windows partition when in that mode, which you could find using the diskpart command, followed by list disk to see what letter is attributed to the Windows partition, that you can identify via it's size.

I must be doing something wrong: I booted in Safe Mode with Command Prompt, entered chkdsk /r, then rebooted to the Advanced Boot Options screen using F8 again and . . . nothing. No scan.

When you press F8 for the Advanced Boot Options, do you have an option called "Repair your computer", or not?

Alright, pick that option and from there, tell me if you see a menu offering you different options, one of which is to open a command prompt.

Clicking Repair Your Computer takes me to a System Recovery window which prompts for language and keyboard, after which "next" poems a System Recovery Options window which prompts you to log on as Admin. That opens a menu of System Recovery options which finally has a Command Prompt option. Do I select that and enter chkdsk there? Will it run then or do I reboot?
