Hi Phillpower 2 I know its late but a quick update. I did as you suggested and since then the lappy has been running fine for 5 hours now without cutting out. It downloaded over a hundred updates and it seems a lot better. I daren't say its cured though, don't want to jinx myself Thanks once again for your invaluable help.

Speccy is flagging up a HDD issue;

Consider creating a back up image of the HDD using Macrium Reflect (free) which you can download from here
