Hi everyone , my 13 year old is requesting a gaming PC for christmas its his first one and i have no idea what specs or minimum requirements i need to look out for when i buy one. I dont want to buy him top of the range machine due to his age and understanding and a friend said id be better building a custom one , however if i get it wrong and it isnt powerful enough it will ruin his life (apparently). I have no clue about graphics cards ect so any advice or recommendations would be highly appreciated.

What kind of games will your son play?    This will determine the class of video card to be used.

In which country will you purchase parts?

Without in any way wishing to tread on iammykyl's toes ( as he is an absolute wizard at this sort of thing) I would be inclined to get your son involved in the decision making process...

May be it would be worthwhile asking him his opinion and exactly what he wants to achieve and within what sort of budget.

If he doesn't have much idea about computer hardware and prices it could be an excellent learning opportunity for him and an exciting project that you could work on together.

Some 13 year olds, especially if they do not have a paid job, before or after school(a paper round for example(delivering morning or evening newspapers) at a weekly wage, may not be completely clear on how much effort is needed to purchase certain goods.... the purchase price of the various components could be expressed in terms of n weeks wages, and this could be a valuable learning experience.

Thanks for your reply guys, he isnt what you would call a typical 13 year old he has autism and his mental capacity varies per subject but gaming is the be all and end all of his life, he doesnt expect one from me as he knows the price of them is out of his range as a rule and he doesnt think i can possibly build one to his specifications because in his words "im old" 😂 , hense the reason i come before you to pick your brains. He plays the typical shooter games kids do CoD , PubG minecraft ect. The graphics card is what i have no clue about tbf so is there a card that is a base minimum requirement for such games ? The budget i have is not huge and i will probably rely on second hand parts to afford it so if there is any prefered sites you guys use ?, Sorry if im rambling or sound like a bimbo i just want to suprise him with this as he has achieved and exceeded his expectations so much this year he deserves it 😇 again thanks for your help x

I would stay away from used parts, you really don't know what you are getting and will be very difficult to get compatibil parts.

I have not included a monitor.

Able to play all the games you listed and also more demanding ones.

Able to upgrade the CPU if required at a later time.

Do you have a current Windows OS?
