Hello all,

 

This Vista x86 computer is my mom's. I first posted here in Virus, Spyware, Malware Removal, but was advised that I was clean of those but I should post here to get assistance in fixing the SFC corruption. Besides the few system file corruptions, the Windows Sidebar keeps closing and auto restarting many times per session. After the Sidebar restarts, a notification pops up in system tray which I think says something similar to, "Data Execution Prevention closed Sidebar to save data loss". As I remember other issues, I'll add them. Do you think a bad defrag may have caused this corruption? Which paid/free defragmention programs are best/safest in your opinion?

Hello front360,

 

Do you think a bad defrag may have caused this corruption? 

 

 

The average user should not need to defrag a HDD more than once every couple of months or more and overdoing defragging will not only lead to data corruption but also bring about a premature end of life for the drive itself. 

 

Which paid/free defragmention programs are best/safest in your opinion?

 

 

Windows own is perfectly adequate and no need to purchase/use any other.

 

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s. 

 

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

  1. In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
  2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
  3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

One of the biggest problems that you are going to have is the weak integrated video chip as it relies on the system memory for support.

 

Couple of things of note in Speccy, one is a security issue that you need to deal with first then worry about the others.

 

There is no anti virus protection on the computer, install a good free one such as Microsoft Security Essentials or Avira free

 

Windows Security Center
User Account Control (UAC): Enabled
Notify level: 3 - Always Notify
Firewall: Enabled
Antivirus: Disabled
 

Change the Windows Power Plan to Balanced, the present High Performance setting not only affects Aero but is also a form of overclocking which causes instability and overheating, use the steps below, restart the computer and test.

 

Power Profile
Active power scheme: High performance
 
Click Start.
Click Control Panel.
Click Power Options (or click Classic View and then Power Options).
Select Balanced.
Restart the computer and test
 
 
Tip

Thanks phillpower2, it's mom's computer and I knew about the AV, she only uses this horrid PC for her 2 emails/month and checking her fb page.  I not sure on this old PC, that the H.Perf. power profile OC'd the cpu... I am aware that it allows a max and min processor state of 100%, but then again, one can just set balanced to the same cpu settings. Since you're wasting your time helping me, I'll try anything...

 

All done and waiting for gremlins, lol.

 

Windows Sidebar still crashed and restarted.

No matter who`s computer or how often it is connected to the internet you 100% need AV protection, online phishing scams are rife and can easily dupe the less savvy computer user, you are obviously aware of this else you would not have post on the malware removal forums first.

 

Chrome, FF, IE and Opera no longer support Vista so you need a browser that does still provide security updates, Lunascape is one such that does.

 

Have you made sure that Vista has all of the available updates installed. 

 

Download then run the All in One Repair from here, disregard the malware guidance but follow the other steps to the letter and in particular ensuring that you first create a new restore point and perform a proper Windows clean boot before running the repair, details for the clean boot here.

 

Since you're wasting your time helping me, I'll try anything...

 

 

As long as we continue to work as a team no one's time is being wasted  :happy:

Yes I made sure, I do have all the Windows Updates.

I'll do the AIO Repair when I get back home, then what will be the next step or will that fix those corrupt files?  Thanks

We will need to wait and see the outcome software wise but as previously mentioned the low spec of the video card is an issue when it comes to Aero + are you aware that internet connectivity is required for all Vista sidebar functions to work, the latter is how up to date weather reports and if you are so inclined the latest stocks and share prices are provided.

     All was good.

phill, Aero was working no problem in the past with her pc.  No hardware or software had changed and she has cable internet.  My guess is my defrag with an older version of Defraggler funked things up, but who knows.

All was good with the question you asked me before I replied with that.  In my OP I mentioned this, and I'm still having the same issue, "Besides the few system file corruptions, the Windows Sidebar keeps closing and auto restarting many times per session. Sorry front360 but after not hearing back from you for almost two weeks it appeared that the issue was resolved so I edited my last reply and marked your last reply as the best answer.

 

Couple of things to consider that may have some bearing on the problem/s, the OS is no longer supported by Microsoft, Chrome or Mozilla, Java is installed on the computer which is also unsupported and has been by Chrome and Mozilla since version 42, this could be borking the security settings in the browser/s + as advised in your previous malware thread by security expert iMacg3 using unsupported software puts the computer at risk of malware attack.

 

See if the below courtesy of Ztruker helps any;

 

 

Use msconfig to determine what is causing the problem

How to use msconfig in Windows Vista

Click on Start then Run, type msconfig and press Enter.
Click on the Startup tab (for Windows 8, the Startup tab has a link to open Task Manager/Startup tab. Use that.) make a note of what is currently starting then click the Disable Allbutton.
Reboot and see if it runs better.
If yes then use msconfig to enable several items at a time till you find the culprit.

If no, start msconfig and click on the Services tab.
Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Again, do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable services until you find the culprit.

Once you've found the culprit, uninstall it or find out how to eliminate it from your system. Simply disabling it in msconfig is a temporary fix at best.
Enable everything else you disabled.

Which repairs from Windows Repair would you like me to run?  I know not to run the fixes for Win 8.1/10, but I don't think I want or need to run all the rest.
