Hi, so im actually trying to help a friend of mine who is staying at a dorm. The dorm already has a modem when she first check in, but doesn't have a router so she went to get one. After hooking it up, she's connected to the WiFi but it returns with Request timed out. I looked at her set up and realised her modem doesnt have a land line connected to it, but has a optical cable connected. Im wondering if the missing land line is the reason why there is no internet access or is anything else is causing the issue. Also shes there to stay temporary so it doesnt really make sense to get a land line nor the dorm comes with a land line. The staff there aint really friendly and did not help out so im desperately looking for help anywhere else. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

The fiber cable should be good enough. Some ISPs will not let you connect a router as they want to charge you to use theirs. They usually filter on Mac addresses. Connect up directly with an Ethernet cable to the modem with a PC and see if it works. If it does then open an elevated command prompt
Win 7: Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator
Win 8: http://www.eightforu...indows-8-a.html
win 10: http://www.howtogeek...-in-windows-10/
and type:
ipconfig /all
After you hit Enter examine the result. Find where it says:
Ethernet adapter Ethernet:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : attlocal.net
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 44-8A-5B-C0-D8-C7
Copy the Physical Address. Now plug in your router to power but do not connect the Ethernet cable to the modem. Log in to the modem and tell it to use the same Physical Address which it will probably call the MAC Address. The process of setting the MAC address may be called MAC Cloning. Once that is done and saved (may need a restart) then connect up the Ethernet cable between the modem and the router. If you have problems with programming the router then give me the make and model number of the router and I will look it up.
