Hi
No matter what audio format I try to play, the sound output isn't clear. When the files are loaded on to a flash drive and I play them on my TV, sound output is crystal clear. Is this a laptop speaker issue?
Thanks in advance.

Please mark this problem solved. I uninstalled and reinstalled Realtek. It's fine now. Go to the full post »

Plug in a set of headphones to eliminate a speaker problem. If it's still bad you probably need a new driver for your audio.
Search for
device manager
hit Enter
Click on the arrow in front of Sound, Video & Game Controllers
Right click on your Audio device. Select Uninstall. Reboot. Sometimes that will help.
If that doesn't help then:
Search for
device manager
hit Enter
Click on the arrow in front of Sound, Video & Game Controllers
Right click on your Audio device. Select Properties, click on Driver tab. What is the name, version and date? Click on the Details tab.
Change Property to Hardware IDs. Click on the top one then right click and copy. Paste that into a reply. Repeat for any other Audio devices.
IF you are getting clicking and pauses then:
Latency Monitor:
Go to
http://www.resplendence.com/downloads
Scroll down to
System Monitoring Tools
and then find
LatencyMon 6.70 (or it may be a higher number if they update)
Click on Download free home edition
Save it then right click and Run As Admin. It will install and then start the program.
It will tell you to click on the Start button but there isn't one.
Instead click on the green arrowhead (looks like a Play button). Let it run for at least 20 seconds. Then hit the red box to stop it.
Edit, Copy Report text to Clipboard then move to a REPLY and Ctrl + v to paste the text into a reply.
Click on the Drivers Tab. Click on the column header for "Total execution (ms)" once or twice until the biggest numbers are at the top of the column then take a screen shot (save as type jpg) and attach it.
Click on the Processes tab then click on the "Hard Pagefaults" column header once or twice until the big numbers are at the top of the column. Take a screen shot (save as type jpg) and attach it.

Your system appears to be having trouble handling real-time audio and other tasks. You are likely to experience buffer underruns appearing as drop outs, clicks or pops. One or more DPC routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. One problem may be related to power management, disable CPU throttling settings in Control Panel and BIOS setup. Check for BIOS updates.

MEASURED INTERRUPT TO USER PROCESS LATENCIES

The interrupt to process latency reflects the measured interval that a usermode process needed to respond to a hardware request from the moment the interrupt service routine started execution. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hard pagefaults are events that get triggered by making use of virtual memory that is not resident in RAM but backed by a memory mapped file on disk. The process of resolving the hard pagefault requires reading in the memory from disk while the process is interrupted and blocked from execution.
NOTE: some processes were hit by hard pagefaults. If these were programs producing audio, they are likely to interrupt the audio stream resulting in dropouts, clicks and pops. Check the Processes tab to see which programs were hit.

Wdf01000.sys indicates a problem with a USB connected device. Try unplugging all USB connected devices and rerun Latency Monitor. Is it happier with your system? Look for a new driver for any device connected by USB from the maker's support site.
Let's see if there is anything running that shouldn't be:

Process Explorer didn't find anything interesting.
Did you have anything connected to the USB ports (other than a keyboard and mouse)? If so does Latency Monitor look better?
Let's get some more info:
Get the free version of Speccy:
http://www.filehippo...ownload_speccy/
(Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!)
Download, Save and Install it. Tell it you do not need CCLEANER. Run Speccy. When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving),
File, Save as Text File, (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK. Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.
(It will be near the top, 10-20 lines down.) Save the file. Attach the file to your next post. Attaching the log is the best option as it is too big for the forum. Attaching is a multi step process.
First click on More Reply Options
Then scroll down to where you see
Choose File and click on it. Point it at the file and hit Open.
Now click on Attach this file.

Hi RKinner
I just have the Internet Dongle in a USB port. No other ports are used.
Speccy File is attached. Serial Number of OS replaced with XXX

Can you run LAtency Monitor with the Internet Dongle unplugged? What does the summary say now?
What is the make and model of the Internet Dongle?

The dongle is making Lat Mon unhappy. Does the sound work better without the dongle?
There doesn't seem to be a driver for the dongle. The support website says Windows uses its own driver. Perhaps if we offload the network it will help:

Sure, Boss. I'll take a screenshot of your instructions and do it right away.

1. Scratchy sound persists even when the dongle is removed and I'm not on Firefox but still online according to the taskbar icon.
2. Did all the disabling as instructed and downloaded OOSU. Ran it.
3. Ran Lat Mon and got the summary.
Please see relevant attachments.
