Dell Optiplex 980 needing dual monitor setup

I got it figured out...Using the video card, I used a vga to dvi adapter and the other vga port to connect the 2 monitors...Thanks for the help... Go to the full post »

I have a Dell Optiplex (S/T 71zgfq1)  I want to install another monitor but only have 1 VGA port on the back..I don't want to mirror but have continuation of data. Can I do this?

Hello again geno368,

 

Can I ask to what you refer when you say that you only have one VGA on the back as in the PC or the screen.

Thanks for the reply....sorry, the pc...he bought a splitter but it only will mirror....not extend..

Aye a splitter is no good as it will only carry the same signal.

 

 

You say " he " so if this is not actually a computer in your possession you will need to ask if the back of the computer has been closely checked to see if in addition to the VGA port is there possibly a display port as well.

Thanks again,  it is a pc I gave him last month.  I have asked him to send me a pic of the back so I can view the available ports...I will advise..

he finally responded.....It has 2 blue video ports on the back and no hdmi....One of the ports is motherboard and the other is a video card with 2,  1 video and 1 dvi.

Glad you are sorted and thanks for letting us know  :thumbsup:

 

As an asides, isn't it amazing what you find when you take a look, an add on video card was not fitted as standard so you had no way of knowing without seeing things for yourself and fwiw, the below is the back of this particular series of Dell which clearly shows a VGA and a Display Port, a HDMI was not mentioned by myself so no idea who or why one got mentioned.
