New build / having various issues

Hi phillpower2, I ended up going back to a fresh install of windows, updated my chipset, storage and BIOS are all up to present. Micro-stuttering was caused by my monitor, as I purchased... Go to the full post »

Hello everyone

I’m looking for some help/advise. I got a new build PC and I am having various issues, particularly when playing games, "micro-stuttering" the game I notice this the most on is world of warcraft.

It doesn’t seem to matter where I am in the game, so its not a case of I am somewhere populated and my CPU is working overtime, it does it in quite zones on low settings (I've done some extensive setting testing).

I’ve tried various fixes from googling around but nothing seems to help. Below is what I’ve done.

Lowered all settings, even dropping to settings lower than my old build PC (which coped perfectly fine)

Adjusted various screens refresh rate settings, such a vsync, tripple buffering, imput lag

Changed to DirectX 11 from 12

Disabled all in-game addons

Updated all my drivers

Disabled sound (this was a fix in 2022 but doesn’t help me)

Turned off any background programmes not required, so things like Xbox App, Nvidia App, iCUE, Razer App, can literally turn the PC on do nothing other than load the game and it still does it

Most of the stuff I found online were saying disabling addons worked, RAM issues but seemed to be on older machines

My PC specs are:

Intel Core i9 14900KS LGA1700 Processor

ASUS ROG Strix Z790-A GAMING WIFI II Motherboard

Corsair Vengeance 32GB (2x 16GB) 5200MT/s DDR5

ASUS GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER ProArt 16GB OC GPU

2TB Samsung 990 PRO M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0

Could this be a monitor issue? I am using an LG ULTAWIDE 2560x1080 connected via hdmi - I have had this monitor for around 10 years with no issues till now.

Another issue I was getting was crackling sound from my speakers when plugged directly into the jack (onboard mobo sound), I found a fix online to plug into the front panel which fixed the issue, but I still find it bizarre this is a fault, my speakers again are ancient, CREATIVE LABS ones, no subwoofer or anything, is it worth me upgrading these too?

Thanks for reading and if you are able to reply thanks for taking the time to try and help me. Any help much appreciated. I'm at my wits end it is doing my head in.

Welcome to GtG,

Missing from your parts list are the details for the most important component of all, can we have the brand and model name or number of the PSU.

Something that we can see in your list of parts is the slow RAM speed, you would get the best from the CPU if you had DDR5 5600MT/s RAM.

Can I ask who assembled the build, a merchant or did you build it.

For you to do if you will;

Download then run Speccy ( free ) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

  1. In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
  2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
  3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Hi phillpower2, thanks for replying

1000W Corsair RMe Series Modular 80 Plus Gold PSU is my PSU, I had the machine built by a company, I'm not super computer savvy I just knew I was due an all around upgrade. They never mentioned anything about the RAM not being sufficient.

There seems to be an issue with Speccy, when I am clicking download nothing happens, tried in chrome and edge

You are welcome  :)

Looks like a problem their end, try the link here

Great PSU so no worries there.

They never mentioned anything about the RAM not being sufficient.

Not sure what you mean by not being sufficient because it is, the speed is just not able to get the best out of the CPU.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply as we have to read the full post to make sure nothing gets missed,, thanks.

Ah that's not me fully understanding, glad the RAM is OK.

Thanks for the new link to Speccy

The URL to the Snapshot is http://speccy.pirifo...BOaECc8Ryj1okWf

Do you think there is any possibility that this is a monitor issue or something else?

Thanks again

I`m not one to beat about the bush so will come right out with it, whoever set this computer up is a cowboy as they have not taken the time to do so correctly.

What is amiss is explained below;

There is not one system driver shown to have been installed.

Once Windows has been clean installed you must then install first the MBs chipset drivers then the storage/SATA drivers and third the graphics drivers, the drivers can either come from a disk provided by the motherboard manufacturer ** or downloaded from their site and saved to a flash drive etc, this is a must and Windows should not be allowed to check for updates before it has been done as more often than not Windows installs the wrong drivers or in the incorrect order and this can cause all sorts of problems.

The reason why this procedure is so important, the chipset is what enables the MB to be able to communicate with all the hardware + are the first drivers that Windows looks for on boot.

** For OEM computers/notebooks such as Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo etc you must only download drivers from their support page, OEMs may sometimes redirect users to a third party site such as AMD or Nvidea to obtain the latest drivers for their GPUs, this tends to be for high end gaming notebooks and desktops though.

Antivirus
Windows Defender
Antivirus: Enabled
Virus Signature Database: Up to date
Kaspersky
Antivirus: Disabled
Virus Signature Database: Up to date

Is Kaspersky a paid for or trial version, regardless it is bloatware that you do not need and the proof being that it is not even enabled, Windows Defender and Firewall are among the top security protection available.

Power Profile
Active power scheme: GameTurbo (High Performance)

Change the Windows Power Plan to Balanced, Ultra and High Performance are a form of overclocking that is known to cause stability and overheating issues, the setting should only be used for gaming type notebooks that have a discrete GPU that needs the extra power.

Partition 1
Partition ID: Disk #0, Partition #1
Disk Letter: C:
File System: NTFS
Volume Serial Number: D615CD94
Size: 1862 GB
Used Space: 158 GB (8%)
Free Space: 1703 GB (92%

Windows should always be installed on either its own drive or on a separate partition on a larger drive, this reduces the amount of free space that is required to be kept available, it reduces the risk of malware attack + it makes creating a regular back a whole lot easier.

A 256GB SSD or separate partition on a larger capacity drive should be the minimum capacity allowed for.

Sorry to be so critical but you are welcome nevertheless.

Thanks,

When I first booted the computer up there was an app called Armoury Crate that appeared to do the updates for the chipset, I'm pretty sure I do have a disk though that came with the PC, where would I get storage/sata drivers from?

Would you recommend I format and start again doing the updates in this order quoted?

I also think I have a spare SSD from my old machine that I can hopefully put in to this one..

You would think the "experts" building this for me would point out these kind of issues you have picked up on instantly...

Thanks for your help

Because of what has been done by others we need to try and undo some of what has been done but if needs must you may need to start afresh.

Have you changed the Windows Power Plan to Balanced.

Is Kaspersky a trial or paid for version.

Something else that you have installed that will stuff up online gaming is using a VPN and you have Nord installed and running,

Fwiw, Armoury Crate is a pain in the provefial that is known to cause issues and you don`t need a VPN if you don`t visit dubious sites.

You would think the "experts" building this for me would point out these kind of issues you have picked up on instantly...

Oh they well know but time is money and if a computer will work using Windows own generic drivers that is good enough for some people.

Hi power plan is now on balanced as you suggested. Kaspersky has been removed it was the "free cloud" so not a paid for service.

I have a VPN but don't ever really use it so I can leave that off on the clean install. Think I got it about 6-12 months ago when I went on vacation so I could use Netflix/Virgin Go abroad.

After format when it asks me to install Armoury I wont.

Just had a look through the box with all the paperwork in it, there isn't an install disk, but does have a quick start guide for the mobo which states to update the chipset through Armoury Crate

However this isn't the most up to date there is an update on the website which I will do after a clean install.

I will also put my spare SSD on and put windows on that only.

So just to make sure I am doing this right...

https://rog.asus.com...pdesk_download/

I should do the chipset then the SATA update on here followed by my graphics driver before absolutely anything else?

Don`t do anything other than the below for now;

Get rid of Nord.

Uninstall Armoury Crate.

Restart the PC, run Speccy so that you can upload a new url for us, if the junk has gone we will provide the info for you test your rig.

Nord has gone but the Power Plan and Kaspersky are still showing in Speccy as are part of Armoury Crate, this just one example of why it is not good to install third party junk, you have trouble getting rid of it.

For getting rid of the AC remnants see the thread here

Removal tool for Kaspersky here

When you next reply after doing the above, include a new Speccy url and let us know how you are trying to change the Windows Power Plan.

You still have some ASUS scraps on the PC + Kaspersky is hanging on in there, the ASUS we can deal with but Kaspersky Cloud apparently needs Uninstall Kaspersky Security Cloud

Your Power Plan is now set to Balanced.
