When we get this working we will try and set the network up so when switching cables you won't have to reconfigure ip addresses.
I made the name change this morning ,and just tested to find that, when connected, I now can get into the Dell files on the Asus. Pictures attached showing the results.
After disconnecting, I opened the Dell C security, changed permissions, and clicked the Apply button, then got a warning that doing so "would change permission settings on the root directory...did I want to continue". For a change, I stopped there, as I assume it's no problem but will wait for confirmation. and about what's below:

Switching is actually pretty quick and easy but...
Since the crossover connection uses Network 6 and the internet uses #2, I'd think both could be set for the wanted usage and the system made to select the correct one to use. I await your instructions for whatever we need to do.
Almost forgot the pictures.

should be ok

Those shots were to show that System and Admin. did, Everyone and Users did not at that time. Then I made the changes, hit Apply, and got the warning.
Since then I clicked the Apply button, got about four more warning messages that it couldn't be done, I didn't have the authority, etc. and it finally started processing, with one small window showing all the files it was going through, similar to files shown when running a security scan. Task Manager showed Activity peaking at screen top. I set the Dell aside, and 4 or 5 minutes later while TM still pegged, I picked up the Dell again, accidentally hitting the space bar. The small window disappeared, activity dropped to half screen,... so I left it alone again. When activity dropped significantly, I closed the C and C-properties windows and reopened to check permissions, which now included everyone. Everything else still works fine, although most folders were/are empty (so little to see).
Haven't tried reconnecting the systems yet. Hope to try in a while and report back afterwards.
Well, after changing the Dell Permissions, I made the cross-connection; changed the Asus IP and turned off its firewall, etc.but still get the same results as reported in Post 26.
I rarely give up on something I start, but I'm starting to wonder if this is worth the trouble. Maybe I should just use a thumb-drive to download the few programs I need on the Dell and forget the interconnection process?

I thought you could go one way so transfer via that.
With the cross over connected try to access the Dell.
Go to Network on the Asus and put in the Dell ip.(at the top where it says network) Can you connect now?
One other option we could try is Remote desktop if dell has Win 7 pro

With the systems connected, the IP's correct, pinging showing both recognized, both firewalls off, permissions still Everyone...no, the system times out.
Something else seems to have gotten changed back too, because now the Dell is not seeing all the Asus files (e.g. the Desktop) and it's getting a Not Allowed message when I click on what I do see. I did look back through the thread and don't see anything that might have gotten changed back and then been forgotten about resetting when testing again..
Try setting up a new user as an administrator on the dell
OK, I have done so.
With the new user logged in check the settings in Network Sharing & discovery
Can you connect now
Page 1 Post #15 Networked Merged Jpeg.
Try changing Allow windows to manage homegroup connections
to
Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers
save changes
reboot
Test
Just reading back through and looking at the pics
Page 3 Post #33 Pic Network C or Xtra Folders.png
Shows fail connecting to Latitude Xtra-2 Share
In the same place did you try connecting to C share or User Share - the other 2 icons

These changes have been made but I haven't connected, re-addressed, etc. and tested yet.

I believe I tried all possibilities and got the same results. I've gotten to the point that I can't remember all details well and often need to keep notes about small things I think might be important.
ok let's just work one way - are you happy to do that?
When you get a chance try the above.
From Asus to Dell
If no good we will recheck dell settings.
I will list out what to check
Remember when testing the above log in to the Dell as the new user
